In the final episodes (that I am currently watching and getting all emotional about) we get to see flashbacks about times of great friendship, of overcoming the challenges that life throws our way. Boy Meets World was unique in a way that it had the same characters, same actors, for the entirety of the series (with exception of changes in Topanga's parents and addition of characters from senior year to college). It could use flashbacks because the characters really had gone through all of this stuff together, they didn't have to hire new actors to reassemble storylines discussed but never seen.
As I watch this show and I look back on my own life so far, my friendships, relationships, and experiences, I realize how much Boy Meets World really can teach you about life. Life is hard but it is full of ridiculous moments that tie together into one life. We laugh, we love, we cry. It is the experiences, the people, and the knowledge we gain throughout our lives that makes everything worthwhile.
The people you surround yourself with mold you as a person. I have gone through many different best friends, each changing me as they come in and out of my life, but I also have a few friends who have stuck around for the long haul. Two in particular come to mind. While they may not be my Shawn & Topanga, they have grown up alongside of me, maturing and learning as we spent time together and time apart. The joy and love I feel from my closest friends are what keep me motivated, what keeps me wanting to challenge myself and be a better person. These friends walked with me through the loss of my mother, a woman who loved them as much as I did. The friends that I have gained since my mother's passing I have invested more of myself in than any that came before. I will never take another friend for granted.
Boy Meets World also teaches us about the importance of family and how our friends can also be our family. These people that love us matter more than we will ever be able to articulate. While our closest friends may not be able to follow us to college or move with us to a new city, they are always a part of who we are as people.
That's what I learned from Boy Meets World.
I wish I could show you a montage of important moments I have had with the people that I love, the moments that changed me the most. Pictures can't do these moments justice because the moments that I cherish most can't be seen in pictures. As I hit a point in my life where I am just now figuring out who I am and trying to decide who I want to be, I appreciate this show more than I ever did as a kid watching it on Friday nights in my footie pajamas.
"Believe in yourselves, dream, try. Do good" - Mr. Feeny
"Don't you mean do well?" - Topanga
"No. I mean do good." - Mr. Feeny
There's so much more I could say about what this show has taught me, but I will stop there. Boy Meets World will always hold a special place in my heart and I will never be too old to watch it. What did Boy Meets World teach you?
