My favorite day of the week was when I got to spend 30 minutes or more in the computer lab playing Oregon Trail or Zoombinis on the brand new colorfully translucent iMacs (circa 1998).
In the 90s video games were awesome and pretty harmless compared to the ridiculous games out now. I am going to list the games that I feel are the best from back in the day. You may disagree but that’s okay, I’ll forgive you.
1. Pokemon (Gameboy Original, Color, Advance) – Pokemon is a game solely based on trying to collect all 150 (and later more) Pokemon while battling for badges and pride. Some people collected the cards and the figurines. I had those things but I only collected the cute ones so it probably wasn’t hard to trade me for really good cards. Parents used to get outraged over Pokemon’s addictive qualities and some churches protested the show and game for fear it was something demonic. Can you imagine if you plopped a ten year old kid down in front of a gameboy color with a pokemon cartridge in it? That kid would probably throw it at you when he realized all he could really do was make animals “faint” or run away.
Recently I found myself playing Pokemon Fire Red for hours at a time, it is still addictive and I am 21.
I am sure everyone can think of more great games of the 90s but these ones are the ones that stick out to me and I would still play them all for hours and hours if given the opportunity. I never want to play Call of Duty or Halo. Give me Pokemon and a corner to sit in and I will be quiet for days.
