I have not been the best blogger lately, but I can assure you my mind is constantly thinking of 90s related thoughts. I am a teacher, so I get to spend a lot of time listening to kids talk about clothes. I also get to spend a lot of time watching awkward teenage relationships unfold, which usually includes the boy ceremoniously loaning the girl his favorite hoodie. Now, for those of you who are not actually 90s kids, let me explain something to you. Sweatshirts did not always have hoods. In the 90s, if our head was cold, we had to wear a hat. Children of the 90s wore something called a "crew neck sweatshirt." Most of mine were decorated with various Disney characters, and my favorite crew-neck sweatshirt had Lola Bunny from Space Jam on the front (I wish I still had that shirt). I don't remember owning a hoodie until I was in 9th grade and my dance team bought them. Now, I know what you are thinking: "But Patsy, if people didn't wear hoodies in the 1990s, what did they wear when they were cold? And more importantly, WHAT DID BOYFRIENDS GIVE THEIR GIRLFRIENDS?" In the 90s, we had jean jackets. Brianna disagrees, but the jean jacket was obviously the most important piece of clothing owned by children of the 90s. I can't think of anyone I know that did not own a jean jacket. I owned several over the course of my lifetime. The best one was from Limited Too; it is still hanging in my closet and it still sort of fits. At one point in his life, my brother owned a jean jacket with a homemade punch embroidery patch of Mickey Mouse on the back. The jean jacket was the best thing to come out of the 90s. Is it cold outside? Throw on a jean jacket! Trying to look California Casual, like Dawn from the Baby-sitters Club? Layer your jean jacket over your sleeveless button down shirt! Or would you rather be more high fashion? Bedazzle your jean jacket, like Barbie! Need to show someone you will love them 4-ever (or at least until 11th period is over)? LOAN HER YOUR JEAN JACKET! it will keep her warm when she walks to Philly Remember when Corey pledged his love to Topanga via Jean Jacket? That's about as serious as it gets. It's not just an article of clothing, you guys. It's almost magical. -Patsy P.S. This post is dedicated to my dear friend Emily because her grandmother recently gave her a very lovely jean jacket. Just take a chance and wear it, friend. You'll learn to love it.
