I was not allowed to watch Ren & Stimpy for the entirety of the '90s, however my sister and I would watch it when my parents weren't home or when they were busy. We thought it was a rebellious thing to do and we wanted to see why we weren't allowed to watch it. My mom didn't want us to watch it because it had crude humor, which is totally fair because it did. I didn't find any of it funny, it was just ridiculous and obnoxious.
This was another show that my sister and I were not technically allowed to watch but we would anyway. Now, I understand that Roseanne is a comedian and I am supposed to laugh but I never laughed at this show except when I was uncomfortable. I was definitely too young to be watching it (my mother was right) but I don't think I would enjoy it now either. I guess the family was supposed to be a little closer to what a dysfunctional family is like, something that had previously been taboo on sitcoms, yet I never met a single family like this one.
I know a lot of people will disagree with this one because they thought it was funny, however I never found it remotely amusing. The family was super trashy (which I guess was the appeal) and I hated it. A lot of people watched it because Christina Applegate is gorgeous but I think that was the only appeal. Katie Segal moved on to bigger and better things, thank goodness. The rest of them sort of faded out for the most part. I do not believe that this show brought anything new or beneficial to the '90s. I definitely could have done without ever seeing it.
To this day, I do not understand the draw of this show. Part of that is probably because I was 8 when it came on television and had no business watching it. It always seemed rather boring and Ally McBeal was not even a likable character. If you are the title character, shouldn't the audience be rooting for you?
Much like some of the other shows I've already mentioned, King of the Hill was about a sort of "white trash" family that was supposed to be funny. In the '90s they began using cartoons for adult shows, so I would turn it on thinking it was a regular cartoon but then would realize I was mistaken. There were many times that all they do on this show is make crude jokes and drink cheap beer. I never thought that this show was even a little bit funny and when it comes on television now I just turn it off. I remember that this cartoon is definitely not for children.
Keep reading. Keep commenting. And keep spreading the word.
