Fergie is a Great Pretender 02/13/2011

These days everyone knows Fergie as a hip hop artist and a member of the Black Eyed Peas. However, I remember her a bit differently. When I was a kid, Fergie was merely the most recognizable member of a really terrible female trio. Let's call them Wild Orchid. I think Fergie was still going by Stacy Ferguson in her ten year period as a member of the band. Their "hits" included: "At Night I Pray", "Talk to me", and "Be Mine". Their songs never broke the top 25 on the Billboard charts and they released 2 hit albums (I believe there were four albums in total). My sister was a big fan of theirs for the first two years that they were around.

As 90s kids, we probably watched way more Fox Family than we would ever want to admit. It had its share of terrible shows and some great ones. Great Pretenders is one of the former.
Great Pretenders was a show, a music game show of sorts, where teens competed by lip syncing their favorite songs in the most convincing way possible. A live audience voted for the winners. More importantly, it was hosted by the band Wild Orchid. I think this was an attempt to boost their fame in 1999.
The slogan for the show was, "They're the greatest singers... they're the greatest dancers...they're the greeeeat pretenders." I always saw Wild Orchid as a joke and the fact that they were on a show about people pretending to be good at something made that joke so much funnier.

In my opinion, being in a band like Wild Orchid should take away most, if not all, of your street cred as a hip hop artist. On top of that, being in a band that hosted a show that was arguably one of the worst game shows of the 90s, how did she get to be in Black Eyed Peas?

The super bowl halftime show was a mere reminder that she's probably been in music far longer than any one wanted or expected.

What do you think? Does Fergie deserve to be this famous or is it just a fluke?
